It is Spring in the northern hemisphere and perhaps nothing symbolizes that wonderful time of the year more than the tulip. While the tulip’s flowering period is brief, one can have early, mid and late season tulips in 100’s of colors and color ranges for the garden. Among the several meanings of the romantic “tulip” motif are “chalice” or “woman”. Tulips are also symbols for love, generosity and privilege and the different colors have different meanings. Tulips occur throughout the Middle Eastern countries, mainly in Turkey and Iran, were brought to Central Europe during the 18th Century. An entire age is named the Tulip Period and you can read all about it on Wikipedia and many other websites about its history and how the elite and high-class society of the Ottoman Empire became immensely fond of tulips as they defined nobility and privilege. Tulips occur in fine silks, velvets, embroideries, laces, carpets, tiles and wall decoration, and in paintings and poetry, even in song.
