Our Celtic Knot needlepoint Arts & Crafts pattern is the August Design of the Month.  Inspired by geometric ornament found in the Book of Kells, Celtic Knot is an original Cross-Point™ design created as a series of interwoven vertical bands. Angular knotwork, stepped motifs, and repeating stripes form a striking small lumbar cushion with an engaging rhythmic design that is both enjoyable to stitch and beautifully suited to today’s home. A BIT OF HISTORY

For more than a thousand years, the graceful interlacing patterns of Celtic art have inspired artists and craftsmen. The same flowing designs appear in illuminated manuscripts, carved stone crosses, jewelry, metalwork, textiles and pottery. Each generation interpreted these enduring forms in its own way while preserving the rhythm and harmony that make Celtic ornament instantly recognizable today.

This month I am delighted to feature our geometric needlepoint kit KARAKUM,  as our July Design of the Month. Kits are available at 20% off retail in all stock colors and sizes on the cross-point™ website.

At first glance, KARAKUM appears to be a bold and beautiful tribal geometric pattern, but behind its striking design lies something much more fascinating. The elongated hexagonal motif found in this design belongs to an ancient visual language that has appeared repeatedly in textile traditions throughout the world for centuries.

Variations of the elongated symetric hexagon geometric symbol can be found in tribal rugs and textiles from Central Asia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, North Africa, and even in the woven textiles and sand painting traditions of South West Native American cultures. Whether shaped by migration and trade or created independently by cultures responding to similar patterns found in nature, these motifs continue to connect human creativity across continents and time.

If you have stitched our classic KILIM, SOUMAK, or TABRIZ patterns, you already know the rhythmic addictive joy of bringing “just one more symbol” onto our jute background fabric. I invite you to explore Karakum this month and discover why Kilim inspired designs remain among favorite patterns to stitch.

We offer KARAKUM in five pillow sizes, including a large 23″x 23″ square pillow, large and small  lumbar cushions, rugs and custom upholstery. Stitched in our proprietary cross-point™ technique, KARAKUM combines the ease of counted cross stitch with the durability and texture of traditional needlepoint. Worked in luxurious French tapestry wool on natural jute, the pattern stitches quickly and rhythmically and creates a durable finished surface for everyday use.

Color dramatically transforms the character of this design. Whether you are inspired by the turquoise and desert grays of the American Southwest,  or Mediterranean indigo and saffron, or traditional earthy tribal reds and blacks, we offer five stock colors. June 14 marks the anniversary of the adoption of the first official United States flag in 1777. As we approach our 250th anniversary in 2026, it seems the perfect time to feature our historic 13-star American Flag pattern. Not a strict historical reproduction, the pattern celebrates and is a reminder of the spirit, optimism, and ideals represented by the original thirteen colonies. Perhaps it is a reminder of the incredible sacrifices made by men during an eight year long war to gain independence and freedom from the ruling crown. The American Revolution by Ken Burns, is a powerful  film available from many sources if you want to delve deeper.

Stitched in traditional red, white and blue, the 13-Star American Flag is a quick and satisfying project. It can be completed in a relatively short time. As always, the pattern is worked in our unique cross-point™ technique, combining the beauty of traditional needlepoint with the ease of counted cross stitch.

Whether stitched as a small pillow, pillow insert, patriotic bag or traditional door stop, it brings a touch of American history to your home. The 8″x8″ pattern can be used in so many other applications. You could attach it to the back of a jacket, to the front of a larger shopping bag, or convert the shoulder bag into a belt bag by adding just three loops for your belt to the back. Another option is to finish it as a framed wall hanging, leaving some jute fringe around the pattern.  Consider adding a matching mat in either red or blue to the frame? The door stop is designed to fit a standard brick 7 1/2″ long, by 2 1/2″ high, and 3 3/4″ wide. It can also be applied to a wood block with the same dimensions.

Bergama reflects the rich floral traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Despite tulips originating from Anatolia, their bold, graceful form completely took over decorative arts from paintings to pottery, to stitched and printed textiles in the Ottoman Empire. From there, the tulip mania continued  all across Europe during the 18th Century. Stylized tulips appear throughout the history of textiles. As you can see in the image below, the larger sizes of Moghul  require more focused counting, but both the small Moghul as well as the lumbar cushions are less intense for counting stitches. My first collection published in the 1998 Catalog contained 10 pages of a Master Catalog of 28 patterns, available in up to four colors. We now offer 55 patterns in multiple sizes and with as many as five to ten color choices. And, we added many rugs and hangings, offered custom colors and our collaboration to convert patterns to upholstery.

A great deal has changed in our world since 1995. But, rather than be frightened by all that is going on in the larger and our own local world, let a cross-point kit or two bring you a time of silence and peace. It’s magical.
