An Ancient Kilim Pattern for Contemporary Needlepoint

Our lumbar Kilim cushion, Balouch Stripe, was inspired by the narrow striped textiles woven for generations by the nomadic Balouch tribes of Persia and neighboring regions. Alternating geometric bands create a lively rhythm that is both decorative and timeless. Although the original kilim design is centuries old, it strikes me as remarkably contemporary. Balouch Stripe is a perfect example of the timeless character of kilim patterns. In the image below are two pillows inspired by historic textiles with a clear leaning towards contemporary expression.

A Bit of History

Stripes are among the oldest decorative patterns in human history. When we stitch Balouch Stripe, we are connecting with a textile tradition that reaches far into the past.

The Balouch women wove on simple portable looms that could be set up on the ground and moved as their families traveled. The width of these looms was limited to approximately 18 inches, so the stripes ran horizontally across the narrow woven strips. For larger textiles, including wraps and tent coverings, the strips could be sewn together.

The original weavers were also limited to the colors they could produce from natural materials available to them—plants, branches, nuts, flowers, and other sources of dye. Many traditional Balouch textiles consequently featured deep, subdued colors.

Today we are free of those limitations in needlepoint work. I turned the horizontal stripes vertically to allow the pattern to be extended in any direction to create a design particularly suited to a horizontal lumbar pillow as well as upholstery or wall hanging. In addition, today we can choose from an almost unlimited palette, including bright, happy colors that complement contemporary interiors.

Traditional Balouch textiles also included miniature symbols among their repeating bands. These motifs formed a visual vocabulary through which people familiar with the designs could recognize tribal identity and origins even from a distance —it’s something I think of as an early equivalent of our modern passports.

One of those original motifs resembles the letter “S”, and I retained it in my needlepoint chart. But you have the freedom to substitute your own initial.

Just think: whoever inherits your beautiful pillow will always know who stitched it.

When I introduced my GRAPE with Leaf Border needlepoint design earlier this month, I mentioned its special connection to my childhood in Transylvania, where my grandfather was a vintner.

What I didn’t realize then was how much more there was to that story.

The Man We Called Opa

Recently, my older brother sent me two accounts he had written about our grandfather, Johann Fronius, and the annual grape harvest celebrations. Reading them, I began to appreciate the importance of my grandfather’s work. I had known him simply as my beloved Opa, who took us for a walk to the nearby vineyard every day after his afternoon nap. I had not understood the extent of what he had accomplished.

When phylloxera devastated Europe’s vineyards, Opa established nurseries producing grapevines grafted onto resistant American rootstock. He supplied growers whose vineyards had been destroyed, often extending credit until their new vines were productive and they could repay him. It was an extraordinary combination of agricultural knowledge, business courage, and faith in other people. His enterprise prospered, but he also helped restore the livelihoods of fellow growers.

Our Last Grape Harvest

For us four children, the grape harvest was one of the happiest occasions of the year. We were excused from school and spent our days outdoors, surrounded by cousins, school friends, and all the excitement of turning grapes into wine. We even had special aprons to wear when helping to pick the grapes.

An open fire added to the festivities, while delicious food was prepared: pork chops, potatoes baked in the embers, and sweet corn grown from seeds brought back from America by a visitor. And, of course, white and red grapes for the table.

We could not then have imagined that the harvest of 1946 would be our last. In early October 1947, before the next harvest began, we left Transylvania for Austria, leaving behind our grandparents and the familiar world of our childhood.

Looking back, I now realize that what we inherited from Opa was not his vineyards or his possessions, but his determination to begin again when everything seemed lost. We four children carried that inheritance with us, first to Austria in 1947 and then to America in 1957, where we began another new life.

When I designed GRAPE with Leaf Border for The Cross-Point™ Collection, I was creating a decorative needlepoint pattern. Today, looking at the design, I see something more: a connection to my childhood, my family, and a grandfather whose legacy has stayed with us across generations.

October seems the perfect month to return to one of my original Cross-Point™ designs, GRAPE with LEAF BORDER. This Floral Geometric needlepoint design has a particularly personal connection for me.

My grandfather was a vintner in Transylvania, where the annual grape harvest was an important family occasion. Grapes were not simply something that appeared on the table or eventually in a wine glass—they were part of the rhythm of family life and the changing seasons. More details about this family tradition are in a previous blog post here.

Perhaps it was inevitable that many years later grapes would find their way into one of my own designs.

Grapes as a Decorative Motif

From Australia to Europe and across the sea to the Americas, grapes have been grown for table and wine on sun-drenched hillsides for centuries. Their familiar clusters, curling vines and distinctive leaves have also made them a favorite decorative motif.

Grapes appear on historic textiles and engravings, heraldic shields and national symbols, as well as in paintings, pottery and other decorative arts.

For GRAPE with LEAF BORDER, I interpreted the motif in the geometric tradition of the Cross-Point™ Collection. Plump clusters of grapes are arranged across the center panel, while an undulating ribbon of vine leaves forms the border above and below.

One of the pleasures of this pattern is seeing how completely its character changes with color.

From Ancient Caves to today’s Living Rooms

Our Design of the Month for September is our Chevron pattern. The chevron is one of the world’s most enduring geometric motifs. Variations appear on Neolithic pottery and other prehistoric objects, and the repeated V-shaped form continued through ancient ceramics, medieval heraldry, Renaissance textiles and the decorative arts of later centuries. Our Chevron pattern draws more specifically upon heraldic chevron motifs found on a 16th-century velvet fragment, translating their strong rhythm into a design for contemporary pillows, upholstery and rugs. But don’t let the intricate graphic look fool you – stitching the pillow is easier than it looks.

Horizontal Illusion, Vertical Ease – The cross-point™ secret:

When you look at the finished pillow, your eyes naturally follow the bold, horizontal zig-zag dancing across the field. Here is the secret: the stitching is worked entirely vertically, stripe after stripe. Please read the specific steps and follow the precise instructions included with the kit and begin at the precise starting point shown on the chart and described in the text. This is essential: beginning elsewhere can prevent the repeating pattern from aligning correctly. When started as directed, you will discover that Chevron aligns perfectly and becomes an exceptionally quick and satisfying pattern to stitch.

At first glance, KARAKUM appears to be a bold and beautiful tribal geometric pattern, but behind its striking design lies something much more fascinating. The elongated hexagonal motif found in this design belongs to an ancient visual language that has appeared repeatedly in textile traditions throughout the world for centuries.

Variations of the elongated symetric hexagon geometric symbol can be found in tribal rugs and textiles from Central Asia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, North Africa, and even in the woven textiles and sand painting traditions of South West Native American cultures. Whether shaped by migration and trade or created independently by cultures responding to similar patterns found in nature, these motifs continue to connect human creativity across continents and time.

June 14 marks the anniversary of the adoption of the first official United States flag in 1777. As we approach our 250th anniversary in 2026, it seems the perfect time to feature our historic 13-star American Flag pattern. Not a strict historical reproduction, the pattern celebrates and is a reminder of the spirit, optimism, and ideals represented by the original thirteen colonies. Perhaps it is a reminder of the incredible sacrifices made by men during an eight year long war to gain independence and freedom from the ruling crown. The American Revolution by Ken Burns, is a powerful  film available from many sources if you want to delve deeper.

13-Star American Flag – Our Patriotic Cross-Point™ Geometric Needlepoint Kit

Stitched in traditional red, white and blue, the 13-Star American Flag is a quick and satisfying project. It can be completed in a relatively short time. As always, the pattern is worked in our unique cross-point™ technique, combining the beauty of traditional needlepoint with the ease of counted cross stitch.

Whether stitched as a small pillow, pillow insert, patriotic bag or traditional door stop, it brings a touch of American history to your home. The 8″x8″ pattern can be used in so many other applications. Bergama reflects the rich floral traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Our Special Offer this month is our CARNATION cross-point™ needlepoint kit , available in all stock colors and sizes as offered on the cross-point website. My interpretation of this historic motif is designed for stitching square or lumbar pillows, using the cross-point™ technique – combining the beauty of traditional needlepoint with the ease of counted cross stitch in wool on natural jute.

Last month’s suzani-inspired pattern, Moghul, helped carry us through the final days of winter. Now, as spring arrives and the landscape begins to glow with fresh greens and color, I want to continue that sense of renewal and joy with a historic floral design that reflects the season.

The CARNATION needlepoint kit is available in five stock color choices during April, and in two stock sizes: Square Pillow 17″ x 17″ (43 x 43 cm), and as a lumbar cushion: 20″ x 14″ high (53″ x 37 cm), a “good for your back” pillow. As always, all designs can be stitched in custom colors, and for this month only, custom color options are offered at no extra charge. We also offer custom colors and sizes as needed for upholstery at  $ 0.35 per square inch – ideal for chairs, headboards, ottomans, and stool tops. As you can see in the image below, the larger sizes of Moghul  require more focused counting, but both the small Moghul as well as the lumbar cushions are less intense for counting stitches. Small Moghul was published originally in Stitcher’s World in 2002. The Design of the Month page on the website shows all sizes with discount prices.
