Pattern History

It is over four years since we offered our pattern SIENA as our Design of the Month. I was inspired by Venetian cut velvets and Jacobean bed hangings to develop this pattern for easy, fast and fun cross-point stitching. It showcases peonies, tulips, pomegranates, birds and leaves in a scrolled fantasy from that period. The size is perfect for large beds, sofas and large upholstered chairs. In addition to our usual large charts in color and symbol, each kit includes additional charts for the scrolls and leaf outlines thereby eliminating a lot of counting. If you will follow our detailed individual stitching instructions you will discover that what looks like a complicated pattern to stitch is actually easy, fast and fun.

This month our offer is three of our most popular patterns in the cross-point™ Collection in soft sages and greens because they not only blend beautifully with Carnation 03 and 04, but are great in combinations of all three or as stand-alone patterns for your sage color scheme. As you can see in the photo above, each chair is a different cross-point pattern using the same colors, adjusted at the edges to fit the chair seats. Michael is only one of many stitchers who have ordered custom work. We offer custom colors for pillows and custom sizes for rugs, upholstery for chairs, stools, and benches.

Or use us to TO BE INSPIRED,we offer  help to choose colors with confidence! We have adapted colors from wallpaper and fabric pieces and from photos sent to us of existing draperies or upholstery. After you choose a pattern from the website, all you have to do is send a fabric piece, wallpaper scrap, or detailed close-up of upholstery so we can blend wools. We will send an image of skeins for your color approval or send actual wool samples, if requested. A print-out of the design will also need your approval.

Note that custom orders require a 50% deposit at initiation, and, once in process, cannot be cancelled, and are not returnable. Please contact me with any questions at sieglinde@cross-point.com.

The romantic “tulip” motif is a symbol for “chalice” or “woman”. It occurs throughout the Mediterranian countries and Central Europe in embroideries, laces, carpets and wall decoration. To me, 2023 is the year of the woman to be celebrated. Honeycomb pattern in all its different sizes, with or without outer borders, was originally created as a companion pillow but is also available as a rug pattern as well as on its own.

Fifty-five patterns in over 300 colors are availablefrom the website. Cards to announce this event have been sent to everyone on the mailing list. HELIOS – ANCIENT, CLASSIC PATTERN

As I wrote on the web page and a previous blog post, this fun to stitch pattern has been around since before 2000 BC. Updating the design in modern colors makes this ancient quatrefoil pattern emminently useful. The lumbar – good for your back – size of 19.5 inches wide by 12.5 inches high is quickly stitched in our cross-point Technique. And, there is enough variety within the pattern, to make it fun! As always, our charts are large, printed in color and symbols, and includes individual instructions to make it even easier – no question about “where or how do I start”!

GREEK INFLUENCE ON DESIGN

The impact of Greek design in architecture and interiors throughout history over the last thousands of years is well known. To me, the simplicity of Classic Greek design elements means that patterns stitched for pillows are easily combined with other design elements in any room setting. Greek Border patterns traditionally are simple and elegant like my Greek Border shown above. As many of you know from the cross-point website, I have a curiousity about pattern history. Every Pattern Page tells you a story in the top paragraph. In developing this new pattern, I started to investigate and found a great deal of information on the Internet. While to me, Greek patterns will always speak in blue and white, as a reminder of Greek white building facades, blue skies and blue seas, I offer my new pattern, Athena, in a variety of color options. Here I show just one example for Athena 06 in primary colors. More companions are listed on the website page for five other color choices.

DIAPER PATTERN
The center in Athena is referred to as a diaper pattern. Wikipedia defines diaper patterns in textiles as “richly decorated fabrics with small geometrical patterns that consist of constant repetition of one or more simple figures or units, evenly spaced.” The Metropolian Museum defines “diaper” in their textile collection as “a pattern formed by small, repeated geometrical motifs set adjacent to one another”. Greek Border patterns, as well as diapers, have been used throughout centuries on pottery and walls. More recently, have even been copied on dresses and belts by prominent couture designers like Gucci and Valentino. Our kits for this design include separate charts for the center for easy stitching.
