Our Design of the Month for September is our Chevron pattern. The chevron is one of the world’s most enduring geometric motifs. Variations appear on Neolithic pottery and other prehistoric objects, and the repeated V-shaped form continued through ancient ceramics, medieval heraldry, Renaissance textiles and the decorative arts of later centuries. Our Chevron pattern draws more specifically upon heraldic chevron motifs found on a 16th-century velvet fragment, translating their strong rhythm into a design for contemporary pillows, upholstery and rugs. But don’t let the intricate graphic look fool you – stitching the pillow is easier than it looks.

Horizontal Illusion, Vertical Ease – The cross-point™ secret:

When you look at the finished pillow, your eyes naturally follow the bold, horizontal zig-zag dancing across the field. Here is the secret: the stitching is worked entirely vertically, stripe after stripe. Please read the specific steps and follow the precise instructions included with the kit and begin at the precise starting point shown on the chart and described in the text. This is essential: beginning elsewhere can prevent the repeating pattern from aligning correctly. When started as directed, you will discover that Chevron aligns perfectly and becomes an exceptionally quick and satisfying pattern to stitch.
