BERGAMA – FLORAL GEOMETRIC KIT

Using our detailed instructions and large easy-to-read charts, this counted cross stitch needlepoint kit is designed for relaxed, enjoyable stitching. Worked in wool on jute, cross-point creates a strong fully covered surface – without stiff canvas, hoops or frames, or difficult finishing.

Bergama reflects the rich floral traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Despite tulips originating from Anatolia, their bold, graceful form completely took over decorative arts from paintings to pottery, to stitched and printed textiles in the Ottoman Empire. From there, the tulip mania continued  all across Europe during the 18th Century. Stylized tulips appear throughout the history of textiles. While the meaning of the symbol changed across cultures, it is most generally associated with wealth and luxury. Also see April post.
