History and Use of Kilims

Kilim needlepoint to stitch available in our cross-point technique this month is based on  kilim designs in our Collection. Kilim tapestries and rugs are among the most ancient textiles produced. Spanning from the Mediterranean, mainly Anatolia (modern day Turkey), across the Caucasus and Persia to Afghanistan,  to the edges of China and India. Originally produced by nomadic tribes for  use as wall hangings, wrappings for use in place of baskets and saddle cargo bags to load onto camels to facilitate moving from place to place.

In the past, kilims were often dismissed as being inferior to knotted pile rugs but now are highly sought after for interior decoration. Their patterns and colors blend into a variety of styles easily, from modern to traditional homes. While historical, religous and cultural symbols and their meaning are disappearing, the patterns present an incredible source for needlepoint stitching. The Kilim cross-point™ Kit Collection

Kilim needlepoints in our cross-point™ technique are a lot of fun to stitch. We have 14 designs available in many color and size options. I have researched the symbols and their meanings and have interpreted them for easy, fast and fun stitching. HURRICANE UPDATE
As many of you are aware, this Special Offer was offered via our Facebook page back in early October because we lost our WiFi Internet connections during hurricane Helene. While this whole area around Asheville is still devastated and slowly recovering, we were lucky to have access to Starlink Internet as of a week ago. We were also lucky that our inventory was safe even though a giant oak fell on our building. It mainly damaged access temporarily until the tree was removed piece by piece. During the hurricane, our bridge and road were swept away but we now have access through the adjacent property to get in and out, as well as delivery services restored.

As I have previously written, Kilim patterns are great for easy and fast stitching. Using our cross stitch technique, and the special instructions included with each individual pattern, you will be amazed by the speed to complete your project. The geometric nature of Kilim patterns are fun for stitchers because it will be intriguing and tempting to see   “just one more” completed pattern symbol. As others have said in blog comments: “this is addictive”. Like other Kilim type patterns in the cross-point™  collection, Tabriz is a lot of fun to stitch!

Tabriz Pattern History

Our Tabriz pattern is loosely based on geometric motifs from saddle and storage bags of the many Nomadic tribes that travelled between the Mediterranian and Asia. Similar designs originated in a number of different regions and merged or were adapted and altered to suit local weavers, stitchers and cultures. Tabriz is available in three pillow sizes, in seven stock colors, as well as custom colors and sizes.

THREE PATTERNS

The three patterns I selected for my July/August Special Offer are really easy – Triangles, Greek Border and Game Board. They have limited colors which means you only need to have one or two wool colors on hand at the beach or on the porch. Prep the jute and you are ready to go. The easiest to stitch is Triangles. Once you have the first triangle done, you never have to count again.

Pattern History

It is over four years since we offered our pattern SIENA as our Design of the Month. I was inspired by Venetian cut velvets and Jacobean bed hangings to develop this pattern for easy, fast and fun cross-point stitching. It showcases peonies, tulips, pomegranates, birds and leaves in a scrolled fantasy from that period. The size is perfect for large beds, sofas and large upholstered chairs. In addition to our usual large charts in color and symbol, each kit includes additional charts for the scrolls and leaf outlines thereby eliminating a lot of counting. If you will follow our detailed individual stitching instructions you will discover that what looks like a complicated pattern to stitch is actually easy, fast and fun.
