Introducing a new pattern HELIOS

Our new quatrefoil pattern – HELIOSis my interpretation of an ancient and universal design that has taken on various meanings across eons of time. Read more about the history of this motif below. The pillow kit is available in 7 color options and in one size 19 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.

What is interesting to me is how the design changes with just changes in color. The blue colorway, #HEL-04, for example, speaks to me of summer, ocean, beach, the Greek islands – of dazzling white washed walls, blue doors and domes, while the multi-colors in #HEL-01 shown above remind me of Incan textiles of Peru. This is a fast stitched pattern for a “good-for-your-back” pillow cross-point™ has become known for. And, you will find many companion pillow kits in the cross-point™ Collection. Please visit the website HELIOS page to see all.

Known to be an important motif since before 2000 BC, the four directions represent either:

  • North, south, east, west
  • Earth, fire, water, air
  • In later Greek Crosses, the fixed cross of the zodiac: Leo, Taurus, Scorpio, Aquarius, representing the four evangelists
  • The Sun God or Goddess – the givers of all life, celebrated in more than 150 ancient cultures

In ancient Babylon and the much later Incan and Mesoamerican cultures, it was the symbol of the sun-god.  Depending on when and where, the spot in the center represented life, water, or spirit, or, among old cultures of the Andes, the center of the universe. The basic cross of a vertical and horizontal line was sometimes embellished with scrolls, surrounded by a circle, or diagonals depicting the solstices and equinoxes with precision.  This last configuration is reflected in many cultures, extending far back into antiquity, and is a testament to an understanding of the sun’s behavior: measurable, predictable, and center to the existence of humans on Earth.

Another new pattern will be introduced in January but in the meantime, during our Annual Sale is a good time to stitch this historic Helios design at the Special Offer discount – one you can pass on to the next generation.

Happy stitching & Happy Holidays!
