October seems the perfect month to return to one of my original Cross-Point™ designs, GRAPE with LEAF BORDER. This Floral Geometric needlepoint design has a particularly personal connection for me.

My grandfather was a vintner in Transylvania, where the annual grape harvest was an important family occasion. Grapes were not simply something that appeared on the table or eventually in a wine glass—they were part of the rhythm of family life and the changing seasons. Perhaps it was inevitable that many years later grapes would find their way into one of my own designs.

Grapes as a Decorative Motif

From Australia to Europe and across the sea to the Americas, grapes have been grown for table and wine on sun-drenched hillsides for centuries. Their familiar clusters, curling vines and distinctive leaves have also made them a favorite decorative motif.

Grapes appear on historic textiles and engravings, heraldic shields and national symbols, as well as in paintings, pottery and other decorative arts.

For GRAPE with LEAF BORDER, I interpreted the motif in the geometric tradition of the Cross-Point™ Collection. Plump clusters of grapes are arranged across the center panel, while an undulating ribbon of vine leaves forms the border above and below.

One of the pleasures of this pattern is seeing how completely its character changes with color.

From Ancient Caves to today’s Living Rooms

Our Design of the Month for September is our Chevron pattern. The chevron is one of the world’s most enduring geometric motifs. Variations appear on Neolithic pottery and other prehistoric objects, and the repeated V-shaped form continued through ancient ceramics, medieval heraldry, Renaissance textiles and the decorative arts of later centuries. Our Chevron pattern draws more specifically upon heraldic chevron motifs found on a 16th-century velvet fragment, translating their strong rhythm into a design for contemporary pillows, upholstery and rugs. But don’t let the intricate graphic look fool you – stitching the pillow is easier than it looks.

Horizontal Illusion, Vertical Ease – The cross-point™ secret:

When you look at the finished pillow, your eyes naturally follow the bold, horizontal zig-zag dancing across the field. Here is the secret: the stitching is worked entirely vertically, stripe after stripe. Please read the specific steps and follow the precise instructions included with the kit and begin at the precise starting point shown on the chart and described in the text. This is essential: beginning elsewhere can prevent the repeating pattern from aligning correctly. When started as directed, you will discover that Chevron aligns perfectly and becomes an exceptionally quick and satisfying pattern to stitch.

At first glance, KARAKUM appears to be a bold and beautiful tribal geometric pattern, but behind its striking design lies something much more fascinating. The elongated hexagonal motif found in this design belongs to an ancient visual language that has appeared repeatedly in textile traditions throughout the world for centuries.

Variations of the elongated symetric hexagon geometric symbol can be found in tribal rugs and textiles from Central Asia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, North Africa, and even in the woven textiles and sand painting traditions of South West Native American cultures. Whether shaped by migration and trade or created independently by cultures responding to similar patterns found in nature, these motifs continue to connect human creativity across continents and time.

If you have stitched our classic KILIM, SOUMAK, or TABRIZ patterns, you already know the rhythmic addictive joy of bringing “just one more symbol” onto our jute background fabric. June 14 marks the anniversary of the adoption of the first official United States flag in 1777. As we approach our 250th anniversary in 2026, it seems the perfect time to feature our historic 13-star American Flag pattern. Not a strict historical reproduction, the pattern celebrates and is a reminder of the spirit, optimism, and ideals represented by the original thirteen colonies. Perhaps it is a reminder of the incredible sacrifices made by men during an eight year long war to gain independence and freedom from the ruling crown. The American Revolution by Ken Burns, is a powerful  film available from many sources if you want to delve deeper.

13-Star American Flag – Our Patriotic Cross-Point™ Geometric Needlepoint Kit

Stitched in traditional red, white and blue, the 13-Star American Flag is a quick and satisfying project. It can be completed in a relatively short time. As always, the pattern is worked in our unique cross-point™ technique, combining the beauty of traditional needlepoint with the ease of counted cross stitch.

Whether stitched as a small pillow, pillow insert, patriotic bag or traditional door stop, it brings a touch of American history to your home. The 8″x8″ pattern can be used in so many other applications. You could attach it to the back of a jacket, to the front of a larger shopping bag, or convert the shoulder bag into a belt bag by adding just three loops for your belt to the back. Another option is to finish it as a framed wall hanging, leaving some jute fringe around the pattern.  Consider adding a matching mat in either red or blue to the frame? The door stop is designed to fit a standard brick 7 1/2″ long, by 2 1/2″ high, and 3 3/4″ wide. It can also be applied to a wood block with the same dimensions.

Bergama reflects the rich floral traditions of the Ottoman Empire. As you can see in the image below, the larger sizes of Moghul  require more focused counting, but both the small Moghul as well as the lumbar cushions are less intense for counting stitches. We are celebrating 30 years since cross-point needlepoint kits were created. We have come a long way since 1995. Patterns have gone from just 10 in our original catalog to 55 on our current website. In addition, we now also offer custom colors as well as our collaboration for upholstery because cross stitch needlepoint in wool is strong and uniquely suitable. See Custom Services for details.
