My cross-point™ pattern collection contains several pillow kit designs that are my interpretation of some of the motifs found in historic Anatolian rugs that date back to the 17th Century. The current Design of the Month, KILIM II (above) is loosely based on a rug found in the rug collection in Transylvania. These Ottoman rugs stand out by their diversity, artistry and remarkable state of conservation. The story of these rugs kept in Lutheran churches of the Saxon population of Transylvania is an intriguing, complex and unique cultural phenomenon.

The mythical country of Transylvania really did and does exist beyond Dracula. Now a part of modern Romania, historically it was the connecting land between the Christian West and the Islamic Orient. It has a long history going back to the second century BC. Continue reading →

Pattern: KILIM II

Kilim II and NEW Kilim II Large Rectangle

This pattern is loosely based on a rug found in the Ottoman rug collection in Transylvanian churches that date back to the 17th Century. The center “cloud” design is believed to have originated in the Far East, probably brought from Asia to Hungary by Magyars around the year 960. It is a beautiful historic piece of textile and a great pattern to stitch as an heirloom to pass on to future generations. The outer borders of traditional motifs have been added from other Kilims to convert the pattern from a large rug to a smaller pillow size 19×19″ (48x48cm), and a larger rectangle, size 26″ wide x 20″ high (66x51cm). Cross-point pillows – Thoughts on Scale

Recently I was asked to help a friend find a new sofa. Both of us were surprised by the selection at a local furniture store: new sofas are HUGE, some as deep as a lounge or day bed. Some sofas are so deep you need help getting up which reminded me that large pillows can shorten that distance. Looking through the pages of decorating magazines I have noticed pillows are large and often come up to the height of the back and even higher if the back is low. Large sofas and chairs beg for large scale pillows, at a minimum 18 inches (45 cm), and anything less than that is strictly an “accent”. On most sofas 20″ and 22″ (50 to 55 cm) pillows are not too large. Piling wonderful richly textured cross-point™ stitched pillows stuffed with lofty down and feather on a sofa makes such a luxurious statement. Some people instinctively remove pillows before settling down but, unlike synthetic stuffing, the beauty of feather pillows is that they mold themselves to the person so they don’t need to be removed before sitting down. JANUARY 2016Pattern: MORVILLE

Our MORVILLE pattern has been adapted from a pair of Elizabethan pillows given as gifts, one to the bride, one to the groom. The originals are dated 1601 and show the couples initials. A center panel contains stylized Wars of the Roses emblems and tulips. The border is a series of braids interwoven with acorns and tulip buds. One of the original historic samples of the Wedding Pillow shown in the photo above on the left side is in the Art Institute of Chicago; the second one is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. A gift of these pillows will be cherished and is a generous personal way to honor a couple’s marriage.

While the originals are done in silk on linen, our kits are in wool on jute, stitched in our easy, fast and fun cross-point™ Technique. An alphabet chart is included in the kit so you can adapt the initials and year to suit your bride and groom or be left off entirely. About working on Jute

Some answers to working cross-point™ on jute

On the cross-point™ Technique sheets included in each kit, under preparing the jute fabric, I suggested shaking the jute AFTER the edges have been glued. Not everyone has the opportunity to go outside to shake the jute and over the years we’ve heard from stitchers about what they do. I want to share those experiences with you because I want everyone to love stitching cross-point™ because it is fast, fun and easy.

One thing I hear over and over from stitchers: “I love your designs and I love the finished product”

Please remember that jute is a natural fiber, mostly hand-made, and, that loose fibers on the surface are part of the process. They do, however, cling not only to the surface of the fabric itself, but also on your clothing as you hold the fabric in your lap. Please share your own experiences so others can benefit.
