UPHOLSTERY SPECIAL OFFER – NO SET-UP FEE!

bal-04 200stool

If you have stitched a cross-point kit for pillows before, you can easily stitch upholstery or cushions for chairs and stools with confidence. That’s the beauty of my cross-point technique – “easy, fast, fun”- guaranteed! Choose from overall repeat patterns, horizontal or vertical stripes, pre-drawn or counted animal patterns. Designs are available in traditional and modern styles.  We show many options on the website.  You can also submit a piece of fabric you want to blend the upholstery colors with and let us suggest appropriate patterns to choose from.

3 EXAMPLES

Measuring for upholstery is easy:
For an existing chair seat, measure front to back, including any padding; then measure side to side including any padding. If the chair seat is narrower in the back than at the front, take those two measurements as well. If possible, draw a simple outline on paper using the measurements.
Alternatively, lay a piece of muslin over the chair and follow the seat outline all around with a #2 pencil or magic marker. Stools work the same way. You need to include your padding but we automatically add the wrap around of 1 1/2″ all around.

Sampler pattern on piano benchThe example above is our SAMPLER pattern adapted to a piano bench. The same pattern can be used as a pad (with your own fabric as backing), and can be in any length and width as required by you.

You can initiate an order with a simple phone call to me at 828-628-2743. Or submit your paper or muslin pattern for fixed sizing and wool quantity calculations to the address on the website. Custom orders are not available in the online store.  As a price guide, the cost is $.30 (30 cents) per square inch and I am waiving the  $25.00 set-up fee during this special offer.  Kit contents for upholstery are the same as for our pillow patterns.

HAPPY STITCHING!

Balouch on ottoman

Our Annual Sale of 20% off Retail is an opportunity to stock up on kits to stitch over the winter months. It’s an opportunity to create an heirloom to pass on to your children and their children. For me, it is an opportunity to thank you all for past and future orders! and, an opportunity to add new information you may find helpful.

Recently I added Pinterest boards and pins  to cross-point.com .
A group of Moghul 03 pillowsIt’s a way to share my designs and fun to stitch technique with a wider group of stitchers across the world. Suzanis (my version shown above) seem to show up in all decorating magazines in a variety of colors and I have dedicated a Pinterest board with links to their history and use. A new blue colorway has been added as well. The Small Moghul was originally published in Stitchers World in September 2000; it can be stitched by anyone as can the lumbar (backpillow) size but the larger sizes may need some stitching experience. Personally, I particularly like the largest size – not as a pillow but as a table top – and there is a photo of it on my website. It reminds me of one I saw at the Biltmore Estate here in Asheville.

BE UNIQUE!

This month at cross-point.com I offer you a choice of three different size bags in easy patterns to stitch. All three bag kits provide wool and fabric for a front and back panel (identical) and finishing instructions but do not include finishing materials since those can be highly personal. You will be the only one among your friends to have a bag uniquely yours. Every time I carry one of our bags or pocket books I get questions like “where did you get that bag?”, followed by “how hard is it to stitch?”, and, “how long does it take?”. If you have stitched a cross-point kit for pillows before, you can say with confidence “not long at all”. That’s the beauty of my cross-point technique – “easy, fast, fun”- guaranteed!

AND HERE IS MY VERY SPECIAL OFFER THIS MONTH ONLY:
CUSTOM COLORS FOR ANY BAG AT NO EXTRA CHARGE!

Pattern KILIM for SEPTEMBER 2014

Always at  20% Off Retail, all sizes, all colorsSmall Kilim in 01 colors

It is with great pleasure that I offer you our cross-point™ KILIM pattern this month, it is our most popular pattern to date.

Pattern History

This cross-point™ pattern was inspired by geometric rug motifs from the many Nomadic tribes that travelled between Mongolia, Persia and Turkey. But, the eight-pointed star occurs in nearly all cultures – ancient and recent – and on all continents. From simple wood carvings of African tribes, to elaborate woven textiles of southern Peru, from Arabian and North African knotted carpets and woven textiles, to Asian and Saxon embroideries as well as American Indian sand paintings, this design motif occurs again and again, often surrounded by mystery and mysticism in local cultures. For stitchers the magic of this universal element is in the translation with needle and thread.

In our cross-point technique, this pattern is a lot of fun to stitch! and, it goes fast! Available in seven color choices as a lumbar pillow, 2 sizes of squares – small and large,  and, shown below,  a rug that can be used on beds, table tops and floors.

3 cool cucumber soups

SUMMER SOUP

three cool cucumber soups

I have friends coming for lunch this week and a friend reminded me of these cool cucumber soups I posted some time ago under Sieglinde’s Page on the top Menu bar,”recipes” on the drop down. Daniel Boulud’s is still my favorite version, so elegant in presentation, but for everyday, Mary’s is the easiest and quickest to make.

Daniel Boulud’s Refreshing CHILLED CUCUMBER SOUP

This soup is super elegant when served with the grissini  – slender Italian breadsticks – as a garnish. I’ve made it for luncheons and am always asked for the recipe. As you can see, it is considerably more time consuming than the previous two recipes but well worth it for a special occasion.

4 large English cucumbers (about 3 lbs)
½ large red onion, chopped*
2 cups spinach leaves, packed
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 Tsp. olive oil
1 lb. Idaho potatoes, peeled and chopped
1 cup plain Greek yogurt**
¼ cup heavy cream
Juice of 1 lemon
Salt, Pepper and Tabasco sauce to taste

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and set a bowl of ice water on the side. Peel the cucumber, reserve the skins and roughly chop the flesh. Boil the cucumber peels with the spinach leaves until tender, about 4 minutes, then chill in the ice water. Drain, squeeze dry and set aside.

In a large sauce pot, warm the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, celery, potatoes and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring, until onions are tender but NOT browned, about 5 minutes. Add half of the cucumber flesh and just enough water to cover. Simmer for 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Remove from heat and chill. (My version: set aside to cool).

In a blender, combine chilled mixture with the cooked peels and spinach, remaining cucumber flesh, yogurt and cream (you may need to do this in batches). Puree until very smooth, then pass through a fine mesh sieve. (I know that’s the proper thing to do but I cheat and skip the sieve).

Chill the soup. When ready to serve, adjust the seasoning with lemon juice, Tabasco sauce, salt and pepper to taste.

To serve, garnish with:
½  bunch dill*, chopped fine and combined with 1 cup plain Greek yogurt, zest and juice of 1 lemon. Top each soup serving with a spoonful of the dill yogurt mix. Serve the remaining yogurt on the side.

*remaining ½ onion and ½ bunch dill are used below to make garnished grissini sticks.
**I will use whatever yogurt I have but I do try to buy Greek, plain, when I shop for this dish.

Boulud also suggests garnished grissini sticks to serve with the soup: Wrap small slices of smoked salmon around one end of each stick, then garnish with minced red onion (from the half left over from the soup), and  remaining dill leaves (the other half of the bunch). Lay one stick on the edge of the soup plate.
If you want to see a picture go to elledecor.com/Daniel and enter cucumber soup into Search. This was published in Elle Décor magazine, can’t tell you what year, the page I tore out doesn’t say, but Elle Décor at the bottom states “for more Daniel Boulud recipes, go to elledecor.com/Daniel)

cross-point.com – Design of the Month July 2014

JULY 2014

13 STAR FLAG & POCKET BOOK

13 STAR FLAG & POCKET BOOK

Today is July 4, 2014, and the United States of America is celebrating the official birthday of our nation. Across the country people will come together for picnics and to watch fireworks explode across the sky. How many of us will remember the great sacrifices men and women made to create what we now know as the United States – united by the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Symbolized by the 13-Star Flag, which became the official United States flag on June 14th, 1777, each star and stripe represented one of the 13 original colonies. Throughout the world the flag has come to represent not only the USA but a set of democratic ideals – “a union for, by and of the people”.

While this particular flag only lasted 18 years, my cross-point kit pattern in red, white and blue is a liberal interpretation of the first official flag as reminder of those ideals. Only 8 x 8 inches (20×20 cm), the pattern can easily be stitched by beginning cross-pointers – as well as those experienced – in just one or two evenings. It can be used as a pillow insert, sewn on the back of a jacket or backpack, the front of a small bag or even a canvas shopping bag. Please see the web page for all details including the full front and back pocket-book.

This special offer for the month of July includes the standard kit (and Flag Bag – Front Only) – fabric, wool, needles and charts, the cross-point Technique sheets as well as “Making Up the Pillow” sheet, at the standard price of $12.95, but is pre-glued, and includes FREE SHIPPING via first class mail. The #FLAP-13 Star Pocket Book, regularly priced at $49.95, is available as a Special Offer at $39.95, and FREE SHIPPING. Now is the time to order the kit and get ready for next year’s Fourth of July Celebration.

Please remember that PayPal will charge the full price plus shipping and I issue the credit for shipping and the discount the same day I receive the order from the website. Or you can call your order in by telephone.

HAPPY FOURTH!

cross-point.com – Sale Update June 2014

Our Semi Annual Sale June 2014

Only a few days remain

I thought this might be of interest: The July August issue of VERANDA magazine has several articles on blue and white for summer color schemes. They call it a classic romantic combination – “classic and timeless all at once”. I couldn’t agree more.  Summer to me is blue and white. I just finished stitching the sample for our cross-point Morocco Square in the 09 blue and white combo:

morsq-09 200Here are a few of the companion pillows in the same blues:morsq09 and companionsshown above: Morocco Stripe Square 09 at left, Triangles Back Pillow 04, Balouch Stripe 04 (at back), Nilos Octagon and the large Nilos in 03 blue and white.

Blue and white is a traditional companion to antiques – paintings, porcelain, warm hued furniture and is the perfect combination to freshen up an  interior or porch, especially for the summer. At any rate, it’s a color combination that’s been around for centuries. The cross-point™ website   shows all related companion pillow and rug patterns to stitch in this beguiling color combination. Last month – May – I listed all the possible blues and whites in the cross-point collection on this blog.

Please also note: Since we no longer send out Constant Contact e-news,  each month I will continue to select a Design of the Month and post it on this blog, Facebook, Pinterest and on the website. Please send me an email via the Contact page on the website if you wish to receive an email notification directly from us.
